Recruitment firm calls for urgent action to avoid Christmas misery for millions

Sky Recruitment Solutions is warning that businesses must act now to fill their Christmas seasonal vacancies or face putting the entire festive period in jeopardy.

The recruitment firm, which has its head office in Derby, is currently inundated with enquiries from businesses across the Midlands that are already seeking to fill roles for temporary Christmas jobs.

Many companies have learned from recent years where a combination of Covid and Brexit has created dire labour shortages, particularly in the logistics, fulfilment and distribution sector.

But Sky Recruitment Solutions, which is in the midst of its busiest spell ever and has enjoyed eight continuous years of turnover growth since opening in 2014, believes many more businesses will be left with unprecedented numbers of unfilled vacancies unless their Christmas planning is already underway.

David Torrington, founder and managing director of Sky Recruitment Solutions, said the availability of job candidates could simply grind to a halt, causing massive delays in the production and delivery of Christmas presents.

He urged any business that was not already acting to address the inevitable seasonal labour shortage to seek expert help to avoid Christmas disappointment for families across the UK.

“Job vacancies are already outstripping the number of available job seekers all year round,” said David. “But when you throw Christmas into the mix, the uphill challenge to recruit temporary workers will simply be too much of a struggle for many businesses.

“Millions of people are facing a Christmas without gifts or seasonal produce unless firms wake up now and set a feasible recruitment strategy in place. After all, the success of their busiest period in the calendar is totally reliant on labour.”

Sky Recruitment Solutions, which had nine staff and three offices in 2020 and now employs more than 35 staff across offices in Derby, Burton upon Trent, Ripley, Mansfield, Nottingham, Castle Donington and Huddersfield, has grown rapidly, with a 250-plus per cent growth in internal staff during the last two years.

The firm has already smashed its targets for this year, with a 70 per cent growth in turnover from 2021 to 2022, last month, Sky Recruitment Solutions recorded its highest ever weekly client base and there are a further 10 active internal roles available within Sky and its sister company, Capella Professional.

David puts this largely down to more switched-on clients seeking expert recruitment assistance in light of huge labour shortages.

He said:

“Our strengths are that we have an amazing culture and team at Sky. I personally have more than 20 years of recruitment experience, which means I understand the challenges faced by employers all over the UK.

“Unemployment is at an all-time low, so the ability to find and attract staff is becoming harder and harder for those with vacancies.

“We have extremely good local knowledge in many regions so, if there are workers out there, we will find them. I’d advise any business that hasn’t already started the search for Christmas workers to talk it through with us urgently - and hopefully mitigate a potential disaster.”

David added that consumers could also help ensure their Christmas isn’t ‘cancelled’ by ordering their presents early, and thus allowing businesses to plan with certainty.
