There are currently around 200 apprenticeship vacancies currently available to local young people and adults across a wide range of sectors including Construction, Engineering, Business, Hospitality and Childcare with imminent start dates.

Matthew Smith explained:
“There have been some concerns that employers would be sacrificing apprenticeship roles due to uncertainties around the economic bounce back but we are finding the opposite to be the case.
“There is still a real appetite amongst a wide range of employers in this area to take on and train young people and adults to secure their future skills base and grow their business.
“Our apprenticeship recruitment team is taking instructions on new apprenticeship vacancies every day and are busy working with young people and adults to determine their career choices and match their aspirations with employer requirements.”
Among the local young people who have successfully completed an apprenticeship through DCG is former student Michael Smith (22) who completed his apprenticeship and is now a Health Care Assistant at the Royal Derby Hospital.
work experience through the innovative Employer Academy run in partnership with the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.
This voluntary work helped him secure clinical apprenticeship role with the Trust.
Michael trained on orthopaedic Ward 206 and was supported academically throughout his apprenticeship by DCG.
Now a qualified Health Care Assistant, Michael said:
“I like caring for people, I’m enjoying the job and I really like the team. I’d recommend it. I’m happy as an HCA, but in future I may look at becoming a nurse practitioner or physiotherapist.”
