Four senior appointments and 12 new vacancies help Medichecks chart its healthcare growth story

One of the UK’s leading providers of private at-home health tests, Medichecks, has unveiled a new senior leadership team and a dozen exciting new career openings to help drive growth and further enhance its links with the NHS, retail partners and the public.

The company recorded its most successful day of trading during 2020, expanded and moved to bigger premises in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, and invested in infrastructure.

Despite bleak figures highlighting higher than national average unemployment figures for the East Midlands, Medichecks also continues to recruit – with 12 new positions on offer.

Roles span clinical, data, operations, and service delivery incorporating varying levels and abilities.

Its current vacancies include:

  • Medichecks GP who will work alongside its network of doctors to deliver customer-focused reports for its customers.
  • Head of Data to lead and develop data strategy and build a dedicated data function.
  • Tenders Manager to help Medichecks navigate the public sector procurement landscape and drive forward tender submissions.
  • Content Manager who will scale up the brand’s content production, introduce a new tone of voice and support new ways of working.

Meanwhile, its key internal appointments include:

Amanda Howard has been promoted from Marketing Director to Chief Commercial Officer. Named in 2019 as one of Marketing Week’s top 100 marketers,. She said: “My role has always been about growth and looking at who buys our tests, who could buy them and what we are offering.

“As a result of Covid-19, we’ve found that people are now more accountable for their own health and we began working with the NHS and private partners to help people become healthier. Customers come to us because they trust we’ll get them their results in a timely way, with detailed and actionable information.

“As a company we’re embracing regulation, keeping pace with change and ensuring the Medichecks’ culture – one focused on positivity and support - remains. We have a young, dynamic team who want to support our growth, and everyone feels a personal responsibility to do their best. I enjoy working for a brand I feel passionate about and where I can make a difference to people’s lives.”

Amanda was previously Marketing Director at Buzz Bingo where she oversaw the rebrand of Gala Leisure retail clubs to Buzz. Prior to that she was Head of Digital Marketing and Creative Services at Nottingham Trent University and Head of Online at Vision Express.

Dr Sam Rodgers has been promoted from medical director to Chief Medical Officer, with his new role focusing on the strategic direction of the company. He is also a practising GP, spending two half days a week at a practice in Elephant Castle, Southwark, which provides care for 90,000 people.

Sam said: “For anyone in a Chief Medical Officer role, it is vital to maintain clinical practice in some form, as it keeps knowledge fresh and ensures you’re abreast of unfolding developments. Part of my new remit is to work with the NHS – a subject close to my heart as I’ve always been passionate about what Medichecks could offer as a partner to the health service.

“Covid has made us all vulnerable, but there are many illnesses that Medichecks could be monitoring to support the NHS; such as patients with high blood pressure, taking cholesterol medications or who have chronic kidney disease.

“Medichecks is reducing the nation’s health anxiety and getting people to the NHS who need to be seen. We want everyone to become more knowledgeable about their health and think about what behaviours, lifestyle choices and potentially which medications they need, to feel better. This helps them become better informed when seeing their doctor.”

Previously Sam was Clinical Director at Hastings Health, a Health Centre in East Sussex, where he developed the clinical governance structure and steered the organisation through a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection, a comprehensive independent check of health services. He was previously Clinical Chief Information Officer for NHS Central London Clinical Commissioning Group.

Matt Fenn, is the new Technology Director, following a promotion from product development manager. He is an experienced and creative digital product manager with a passion for balancing a user’s needs while meeting business objectives and finding what is technically achievable.

Matt previously founded Jumplead Online Marketing Software, and before that worked at Mooloop, where he was a director, designer and project manager for a range of websites and web applications.

He said: “Medichecks has enough of a digital footprint to provide a pivotal healthcare role in the UK, and our success will be down to having the right strategy and tools to do that. At a time when the NHS is changing, there is an opportunity to look at how people use private health services such as health tests at home, and how we can complement and support traditional services.

“I’ve recently worked on introducing Medichecks’ test kit infrastructure. Our test kits now have an activation code, which associates the test with a customer’s personal account and removes the need for lots of forms and paperwork. It means we can track tests through their lifespan - from release, to sample, to the laboratory for testing, then back to us for analysis and into the hands of the customer. It enables us to do things at scale, with pace and flexibility that would otherwise have been impossible. The world has changed in the last nine months, but it has changed the healthcare landscape in a way that could allow us to thrive. It is exciting to be working within the health sector at this time.”

Victoria Holden has become Head of People and Customer Service at Medichecks. She was previously Head of Customer Services with the company and is an operations manager with a history of excelling in the customer services industry.

Before joining Medichecks, Victoria held senior leadership roles withing the customer service industry at companies including Experian and Domestic and General. At Experian she received an award for the successful roll out of a culture change programme across the business, inspiring positive change. She also led a transformation programme, implemented and nurtured a coaching culture, and was the key sponsor to embed results of the company’s engagement survey.

She said: “Medichecks has always had a strong culture; it is like a family culture, with a great atmosphere. My role, as we grow, is to explore what we can build on to make things even better, with a dedicated people strategy. When we went into the first lockdown, I was keen not to lose the office atmosphere. We introduced a number of different initiatives to keep this alive including regular communication sessions, people nominated awards, a social space to post and chat with different communities set up by our ‘People, Lunch and Learn’ sessions, and our first virtual Christmas party!

“We put in processes to keep people up to date and to provide transparency about how our business is doing. We ask for regular feedback and input from our people about what they want to hear about in these sessions. And we make sure that everyone can attend.

“We also made changes as a business, such as ensuring customers who buy health tests receive a tracked delivery. The way we operate has changed for the better and these changes have been people-led.”

In 2020 Medichecks expanded its range of illness and wellness checks, introducing a Covid-19 antibody test to help people understand their own coronavirus status and level of individual health risk. It also launched a ‘Right to Diagnosis’ campaign, supporting those who have wasted years seeking a diagnosis for conditions such as thyroid problems, coeliac disease and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), so they can receive effective treatment.

Since its launch in 2002, the company has processed more than five million blood test results across the UK and has around 300 tests available, many of which can be taken via at-home finger-prick collection.
