“All Sorted” – work experience leads to permanent role with award-winning communications agency

A four-week work experience placement has turned into a new hire for a Nottingham communications agency.

Sorted Communications (recently rebranded from The Effective English Company) provides an extra pair of hands to busy in-house communications teams around the UK. The company works entirely remotely and has just welcomed its newest member of the team.

Laura Roberts, based in the North West, is Sorted Communications’ new marketing and communications assistant. She joined the company in February on a four-week work experience placement – and impressed the team so much that she was offered a permanent contract before her placement ended.

“I applied to work for Sorted as a freelance proofreader, having done bits of proofreading for a year or so,” said Laura. “I have a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and have struggled to find work in that field. It’s a competitive industry, and I kept finding myself in the old catch-22 where I needed experience to get a job and needed a job to get experience.

“When I applied for the position at Sorted, I also sent in some writing work I’d done, on a whim.”

While Laura lacked the relevant experience to be taken on as a proofreader, CEO Ali Marsland saw her potential, and offered her work experience.

“Looking at Laura’s CV reminded me a lot of myself when I was at a similar stage in my career,” says Ali. “I could see from her application that she had a really good set of skills, but hadn’t been given many opportunities to use them.”

Sorted Communications works predominantly with the NHS and other health sector organisations and although she was new to communications, Laura did have some previous experience of working in the NHS.

During her placement, Laura took on marketing work for Sorted and was introduced to some communications tasks. Three weeks into the placement, she was offered a permanent position.

“I began my placement with very little idea of what the world of communications involved,” said Laura, “but I found my feet quickly and really enjoyed taking on new tasks and learning new things. The support provided by Ali and the team was excellent.”

“We’re really pleased to have Laura on board as a permanent member of the team,” said Ali.

“She’s a great writer and picks things up very quickly. I’m looking forward to working with her more and continuing to support her professional development.”
