Rural businesswomen team up to champion women in farming this Christmas

Smallholder and founder of the Rutland-based brand Land Girls, Emma Brown, has teamed up with Caroline Stafford at The Kitsch Hen in Oakham to create biscuits and gift packs in an act of solidarity for women in the farming industry this Christmas.

When she was knocked back in an application for a farm tenancy last year, Emma set about looking for alternative ways forward in farming, committing herself to supporting other women struggling to survive in agriculture. The result was a striking brand name and logo – Land Girls – and the launch of two coffees sourced from women’s co-operatives in Sumatra and Peru.

Now, turning her focus closer to home, Emma has joined forces with a woman equally passionate about farming and their collaboration is based on their shared belief in the vital role that women play in agriculture today.

Dairy farmer’s wife Caroline bakes and iced biscuits for every occasion, each one hand stamped with a special message. Together they have come up with a selection of light-hearted sayings for the biscuits, including ‘It Is True – Farmers Are Magicians Who Produce Stuff From Mud’.

Emma says:

“The biscuits taste really delicious and look really pretty too! Caroline, a true land girl herself, lived on an organic dairy farm in Rutland and the ingredients, wherever possible, are Fairtrade, local and organic. Our beautiful gift packs combine a biscuit of your choice with either one or two bags of our specialist coffee farmed by women.”

There’s a choice of Sumatran or Peruvian coffee; ground or beans. The coffee and biscuit gift packs are priced at £18 and £25.50 respectively. The chunky single biscuits, approximately 8cm square, are available on their own, priced at just £10.50 from www.land-girls.co.uk
