Star Trust donates £2,500 to local charity to support elderly

A Nottingham-based charity which supports elderly people across the county has received a boost following a £2,500 donation by Star Trust.

The Wainman Trust will use the money to help run two weekly clubs – held in Arnold and Clifton – aimed at giving place for older people to meet, share a healthy meal and take part in fun activities and outings.

Olwen Davis from the Wainman Trust, said:

“We are very grateful that Star Trust has granted us this funding as it will enable us to continue providing the service our members need. The clubs support a number of older people, many with disabilities, giving them somewhere to come every week, make new friends and enjoy outings together.

“Loneliness and isolation is a huge problem for older people and our clubs help to prevent this, so we are  really looking forward to putting the funding to good work right away.”

The clubs, which are run largely by volunteers, take place every week and currently support around 40 individuals aged between 70 and 95 – many of whom have some kind of disability.

James Bentley of the Star Trust said

“The Wainman Trust is a great charity and we are delighted that we are able to help them. They offer a great service within the local community and we want them to continue with this for as long as possible.

“It is so important for older people to have somewhere to go and socialise with other like-minded people and we are delighted that the Wainman Trust will be able to provide weekly clubs for another year, which not only helps the older people who attend but also gives families and carers a break."

The Wainman Trust via the Together Friendship Clubs which were established in 2017 has already provided 2434 member sessions, giving 762 hours of respite to families and carers. Together@Arnold and Together@Clifton operate on Mondays and Wednesdays respectively between 10am and 3pm.

James added:

“It is brilliant that Star Trust is in a position to help charities such as the Wainman Trust. The work they do is not to be underestimated and we are thrilled to accept their request for funding. We hope they continue to operate for many more years to come.”
