Former Nottingham Serviceman Turned Financial Adviser Finalist in British Ex-Forces in Business Awards.

A Nottingham based Chartered Financial Planner has been announced as a finalist in a prestigious national award ceremony.

Nick Onslow, a former Late Entry Army Captain who spent 25 years in the military, is shortlisted in the ‘Role Model of the Year’ category at the British Ex-Forces in Business Awards.

The awards are the largest celebration and recognition of ex-military personnel in the UK workforce, and the employers that support current and former members of the British Armed Forces. It is dedicated to providing a much-needed platform for promoting the achievements of ex-military who are now excelling in the business world. And Nick is certainly doing just that!

Developing Skills and Expertise

Nick is now a Chartered Financial Planner and member of the Senior Leadership Team at The RU Group, a leading group of independent, personal and corporate financial advisers headquartered in Nottingham. Putting the skills he learned in the military to good use, Nick has been the sole architect of The RU Group’s “Culture of Learning” transforming the level of knowledge within the business.  This has seen more than 30 exam passes from 22 different members of staff and led to Russell Ulyatt receiving Chartered status in 2016. The Group has this year recorded its highest profit and turnover figures to date.

Nick has also taken on the recruitment and mentoring of new advisers and is featured regularly in the media, answering reader’s questions in The Telegraph’s money makeover section and appearing on Notts TV, offering advice on how to save for Christmas and deal with the financial pressures afterwards.  Nick was also awarded the prestigious Chartered Insurance Institute High Achiever for Nottingham in 2017.

Commenting on being shortlisted for the award, Nick said: “Working hard and developing the skills of individuals to create effective teams is central to how the military operates and I am pleased to be able to draw on my experience to make a positive impact at The RU Group and for our clients.

I am delighted to be shortlisted for the award as it is a cause that means a lot to me. The transferrable skills you learn in the military can be hugely valuable to companies and I encourage all employers to consider hiring former military personnel when recruiting.”

Ben Rossi, journalist and founder of the British Ex-Forces in Business Awards, supports this view. He comments:

“Servicemen and women develop qualities that are easily transferable to roles in business, yet many employers fail to recognise this or are deterred by common misconceptions. Recognising these attributes and doing more to recruit, train and generally support military veterans is not only the right thing to do but it’s also vital to the prosperity of our economy. We were overwhelmed by the talent on display in the nominations received for the awards, and we look forward to recognising this unique and admirable group of people on 17 May.”

Nick’s Military Career.

Having joined the British Army in 1983 at the age of 16 as an apprentice tradesman in the Royal Army Pay Corps, Nick left 25 years later as a Captain and Regimental Administration Officer in the Adjutant Generals Corp. During his time in the Army Nick served with 11 different units and completed 7 operational tours including two in Northern Ireland and Iraq and others in Bosnia, Rwanda and Afghanistan. In 1995 Nick was also part of a self-sufficient 6-man team which in 35 days crossed the 350 miles of the Greenland icecap.

The winner of the ‘Role Model of the Year’ award will be announced at the awards ceremony on the 17th May 2018 at The Grand Connaught Rooms in London. The awards will be hosted by broadcaster and journalist Julia Hartley-Brewer with Andy McNab, former SAS soldier and author of ‘Bravo Two Zero’ appearing as guest speaker.
