Asbestos Management Firm’s Charity Partnership Set To Raise £5,000

Asbestos consultancy and management firm ACMS has named the British Lung Foundation as its charity of the year for 2016/17… and aims to raise at least £5,000 for the organisation.

The Nottingham-based firm will donate 2.5% of sales revenue from its online training and ‘Vision’ software packages to the charity, which supports vital research into treatments and cures for all forms of lung disease and supports thousands of people affected by poor lung health, helping them to live well.

ACMS, which was founded in 2003, is an asbestos consultancy and management services company which offers awareness training, compliance surveys, compliance software, surveying and project management. The company has grown into a multi-faceted business delivering software and services for fire, water, building condition and disability discrimination.

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that is usually fatal. It begins to grow in the pleural membrane – the two layers of cells lining the outside of the lung and the inside of the chest.

The main cause of mesothelioma is breathing in asbestos dust. Around 80% of mesothelioma cases occur in men, which reflects the greater likelihood of men having worked with asbestos in heavy industry or the armed forces.

The disease kills 48 people every week in the UK, according to the Health and Safety Executive.

Treatments are currently aimed at easing symptoms and improving quality of life rather than a cure.

British Lung Foundation CEO Dr Penny Woods said:

“British Lung Foundation is pleased to be partnering with ACMS UK. We thank ACMS for its generous support, as we search for new and better ways to prevent, treat and cure lung disease.

“The UK has the worst published mortality rates in the world for mesothelioma, due to high asbestos use by our industries and businesses in the past. Mesothelioma is a relatively rare cancer, but it is deadly and kills around 2,500 people a year.

“That's why we need to step up research, to find a cure or treatments that will halt the progression of this disease.”

Steve Aldridge, ACMS managing director, added:

“Asbestos is still more widespread than people think and remains a big risk for many different types of business which have asbestos-based materials in their premises.

“We’ve seen at first hand the devastation and misery that mesothelioma and other asbestos-related lung diseases can cause, which is why we are delighted to be partnering with the British Lung Foundation throughout the year and raising funds for the vital research and support activities it undertakes.”
