Clothing stores merge in latest retail change at marina

A ladies fashion store celebrating its 10th anniversary at a Derbyshire marina has moved to neighbouring premises as part of a merger with its sister brand.

White Finn owner Rachel Robinson said business was booming since the recent relocation of her fashion store to a new unit at Mercia Marina, near Willington, South Derbyshire.

The shop, which sells ladieswear and accessories, has merged with another of the marina’s long-standing fashion stores, Blue Water Clothing, which is run by Rachel’s husband Steve.

The couple, both from Findern, decided to merge the businesses rather than remain as rivals at the marina’s popular Boardwalk retail and leisure development. Both stores had been at the marina since the Boardwalk opened a decade ago.

Now, White Finn, which prides itself on the ethical sourcing of organic, natural and breathable fabrics, will be stocking a variety of brands that had previously been exclusive to Blue Water.

The merger is one of several recent changes at the marina, including the arrival of Fletcher & Co estate agents and homeware store JT England, and the expansion of children’s gift store Hettie & Sid and Elegant Touch beauty salon.

Rachel said:

“Now, our loyal customers can still find their favourite brands and all visitors can explore and enjoy our new, curated selection. Sustainability is at the heart of our brand, with eco-friendly fabrics and ethically sourced materials leading the way.

“We offer a wide range of women's fashion, blending modern designs with timeless appeal. When Steve and I looked at our joint offerings, we felt it made more sense to combine efforts at the marina under the White Finn branding.”

Steve’s business, Blue Water, still has three other stores – two in Belper and one at nearby Barton Marina.

Shoppers heading to the new White Finn store can discover everything from organic cotton tops and casual dresses to cosy knitwear and versatile trousers – each piece crafted with care and attention to detail. Brands on sale include White Stuff, Seasalt Cornwall, Tirelli and Lilly and Me.

Robert Neff, general manager at Mercia Marina, said:

“We’ve had an extremely busy few months at the marina, not just with visitors and boaters but with the very positive changes we’ve seen on the retail side.

“It’s fantastic to see that Rachel and Steve have combined their businesses under one roof and still remain here as one of Mercia’s original businesses, highly valued by customers old and new.”

He added: “The changes at the marina do not end there – but people will need to watch this space for some more exciting announcements to come.”

The marina has won many awards since it launched in 2008, including seeing the Boardwalk judged the UK’s Best Small Commercial Building nationwide, South Derbyshire Community Awards, a five-star Visit England Holiday Park Award and numerous gold medals in the annual David Bellamy Conservation Awards.

The Boardwalk has a mix of boutique retailers, a cafe, offices and a two-storey bar and restaurant that overlooks the marina. The neighbouring Piazza development is home to an award-winning restaurant as well as quality homewares, wellbeing, jewellers and an art gallery.
