The day was designed to spark interest in careers within the manufacturing industry, giving students the opportunity to learn about lean manufacturing, explore career pathways, and even take part in a manufacturing workshop.
After an introduction to the team and the site, students learnt about the concept of lean manufacturing – a key component of our operations at Pennine. Students learned how eliminating waste and improving efficiency is critical in delivering high-quality products, especially in the medical device sector.
Our guest speaker, Dr Chamkaur Singh Kang from Qinesis and representative from the East Midlands Manufacturing Network, shared valuable insights into the importance of innovation and sustainability in manufacturing. Students were encouraged to explore how their interests in STEM subjects can lead to fulfilling careers in the industry.
The highlight of the day was the plug-building workshop, where students got to experience the practical side of manufacturing. Guided by our Head of Operations, Richard, they assembled plugs from start to finish, giving them a deeper understanding of what goes into the components of a production line. This hands-on activity allowed students to apply the theories they learned throughout the day.
Some members of the wider team were kind enough to give some of their time to take a group of students around site for a live tour, whilst sharing personal career stories and demonstrating the many different paths available within the manufacturing sector—from engineering to quality control, and from operations to product development. The students gained a clearer understanding of the rewarding opportunities that a career in manufacturing can offer.
Each student left the event with their very own Pennine-branded goody bag, packed with materials to remember the day. The feedback from both students and teachers was overwhelmingly positive, and we are proud to have made a beneficial impact on young people within the area.
Mrs. Sheila Emery, teacher at Noel-Baker Academy, reflected on the event:
