Youth Football has a bright future with new pitches in Staveley

Young people in Staveley are set to benefit from improved sports facilities as part of the Staveley Town Deal, which sets out ambitious plans to pull in more than £25m worth of funding to the area. 

Funding of £150,000 will be used to invest in drainage on the Chantry playing fields, where Staveley Miners Welfare Football Club (SMWFC) youth teams currently play and train. These works will ensure that less games are postponed and that children will have more playing and training time where they can improve their health and well-being. 

The money has been secured thanks to a Chesterfield Borough Council bid to the Government’s Accelerator Fund – submitted on behalf of the Staveley Town Deal Board as part of wider plans to regenerate the town. 

It is part of the same investment at King George V Playing Field led by the council which will see new play equipment and an outdoor gym being added to the park. Together all these improvements will ensure that Staveley has facilities suitable for every age group. 

Ivan Fomin, Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said:

“Supporting the Staveley Miners Welfare Football Club in this venture will make a real difference to the lives of young people in Staveley. The Miners Welfare is a key part of the local community and this investment will help ensure there are fantastic facilities for young people. We are currently working hard to deliver more of our plans which will directly benefit local residents as part of the Town Deal.” 

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Deputy Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board said:

“It is fantastic to see these accelerator projects progressing at this pace. These projects are just a small part of the overall Town Deal which has the potential to transform Staveley and improve the lives of local people over the next few years.” 

The Staveley Miners Welfare Football Club hopes to build on this and create a Sport Skills Academy to engage with young people in Staveley and teach them about the benefits of leading an active lifestyle. 

Terry Damms, Chairman of SMWFC, said:

“It is a well-known fact that new drainage will enhance the number of games able to be played and reduce the number of games lost due to waterlogged pitches, we’re so pleased to have the funding to deliver this for the Staveley community.” 

The works will be delivered by Premier Pitches, who are based near Chesterfield and are currently responsible for maintenance of the Chesterfield Football Club stadium pitch. They also work for with many other clubs throughout the UK and also in Europe. 

Josh Freer, Project Co-ordinator for Premier Pitches, said:

“Premier Pitches are delighted to have been selected as main contractor for the pitch drainage works for this project. It’s an exciting community project to be involved with and great to see funding being put into junior /grass roots football for valuable pitch improvement works.” 

The works are scheduled to be completed by March and will be managed by Staveley Miners Welfare Football Club and delivered by Premier Pitches with other ancillary works carried out by local firms.
