‘Rule of six’ law could impact business confidence just as it was rising, says East Midlands Chamber

Commenting on the introduction of the so-called “rule of six” law that restricts the number of people in social gatherings from today (Monday 14 September), East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire) chief executive Scott Knowles said: “We empathise with the Government’s difficult position as public health is obviously of vital importance, but the ‘rule of six’ law is also going to prolong the economic recovery.

“It will have a huge impact on sectors such as hospitality, events and tourism that have already been among the worst hit during the pandemic as they rely on having large numbers of people.

“Therefore, it’s crucial that the Government comes up with a strategy to provide targeted support to these industries in order to prevent more businesses from collapsing and more jobs from being lost.

“The new law will also knock wider business confidence, which was just beginning to rise following initiatives such as the hugely successful Eat Out to Help Out scheme alongside the return to workplaces and reopening of schools.

“The last thing the economy will need is any further setbacks in the coming weeks.”
