Following reports in recent days that trade negotiations between the UK and EU have stalled, Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire), said: “While the world has understandably been preoccupied with the Covid-19 pandemic, the countdown to the end of the EU-UK transition period has been ticking.
“Brexit is back on the agenda and, worryingly, so does the prospect of a no-deal outcome on 1 January. At a time when UK business desperately needs an injection of positivity to stir some confidence, this only heaps on more uncertainty about what is around the corner.
“The East Midlands, with its manufacturing strengths, relies on a productive trading environment with the EU and it would be a catastrophe for many businesses if we were to crash out of the union without a deal. Therefore, we urge the Government to put a renewed focus into finding a suitable resolution before it’s too late.”
