Home improvement trend opens door to further success for Mansfield firm

A trend that saw people improving the look of their homes helped a family company in Mansfield to record an exceptional 2019/20 trading year.

Mansfield Garage Doors, in Great Central Road, has calculated that over 12 months, it carried out more than 1,700 jobs, including services, repairs, reinforcing existing security equipment or adding motor components so doors can be opened at the touch of a button.

Skilled engineers installed just over 700 new garage doors with the majority being sectional doors and motors, and the remaining made up of up-and-over doors, roller doors and side-hinged doors.

Additionally, the company, which was founded 52 years ago, also installed a number of new gate systems.

Director Rachel O’Connor said: “The 12 months to March 2020 were some of the best months we have ever had as a business in terms of new installations and regular services.

“We think that many people were looking at all sorts of home improvements, and in particular doing the jobs they have put off and tidying up how their homes looked on the outside.

“We certainly noticed a trend in people coming to our showroom and saying that they wanted to spruce up their homes.”

It was a good first year as directors for Rachel and her sister Alison Phelan. They run the business along with their father Graham Kirk, who co-founded the company and is the managing director, and mum Sue, who is the financial director.

Graham said: “We have a wonderful team of people and I’m pleased to be able to say that we have built a reputation for being the garage door experts that people turn to for guidance and support. We have a number of people who return to us and that makes us very proud.”

In October last year, Mansfield Garage Doors won a lengthy Company Names Tribunal after a different company changed their original name and registered Mansfield Garage Doors as their registered business name.

Mansfield Garage Doors had originally been founded as Kirk Silo (Installations) Ltd, but had been using Mansfield Garage Doors as a trading name for around 35 years. They took the case to court, winning and then formally becoming Mansfield Garage Doors Limited.

The company has recently started to slowly reopen following the coronavirus lockdown, with engineers being able to carry out repair work and installations while fully adhering to guidelines.

Alison added: “We’ve had quite a few new leads and people contacting us through Facebook asking about particular products and spares too, as we have one of the largest collections of spares around.

“I’m delighted to be able to say that we get a lot of good reviews and recommendations on social media, and so we are confident that our good business continues throughout the coming year.”
