Latin America and the Caribbean open for business to Midlands exporters

New exporting opportunities across the world’s third largest economy were explored this week as the Department for International Trade (DIT) and the Midlands Engine hosted a virtual visit from Jo Crellin CMG, HM Trade Commissioner (HMTC) for Latin America and the Caribbean (LATAC).

During lively, interactive discussions with businesses and trade organisations across the Midlands,   HMTC Jo Crellin highlighted the potential for export growth in LATAC and the package of support available to UK businesses to increase their chances of success.

Latin America and the Caribbean is home to some of the world’s most rapidly developing economies and offers huge opportunities for Midlands companies that want to grow their business overseas. There are significant synergies between the traditional strengths of businesses in the Midlands region and the major areas of opportunity within LATAC.

Jo Crellin CMG, HMTC for Latin America and the Caribbean, said:

“Opportunities in Brazil and Mexico play to the advanced engineering expertise of the Midlands region.

“Agritech is also becoming increasingly important, particularly in areas such as precision farming and irrigation and products designed to increase productivity. Fast-growing populations with increasing disposable income and reducing trade barriers make LATAC markets an attractive destination for British food and beverage companies, especially those at the premium end of the market.

“Clean growth is continuing to grow at a really high rate across the entire region. These are countries that are massively affected by climate change, so there’s a real commitment to energy transition.”“For businesses interested in interested in exporting to Latin America and the Caribbean there’s a whole ecosystem of support available from the Department for International Trade. With over 140 people operating in 19 markets right across the LATAC region, the team can offer support every step along the export journey towards winning business in the region.”

Derek Carr, Operations Director at Addfield Environmental System and Midlands Engine Export Champion, said:

“At Addfield we have seen really strong growth across Latin American and the Caribbean over the past three years and can proudly say we’ve installed machines in virtually every country in the region.  In fact Latin America and the Caribbean has become one of our most in demand areas accounting for over a third of our organic enquiries, second only to the UK and in sectors ranging from agriculture, healthcare to oil and gas.

We have achieved this with the support of DIT, helping us to create a network of excellent distributors and we’re talking to many more.”
