London Stock Exchange Opened by Local Businessman

A Loughborough businessman has officially opened the trading market at the London Stock Exchange.

Dr Nik Kotecha OBE, Chief Executive of Morningside Pharmaceuticals, joined a number of business leaders for the Market Open Ceremony on the Exchange’s famous balcony, in Paternoster Square.

The ceremony involved Dr Kotecha assembling at the front of the balcony for the minute’s countdown, followed by an engraved glass tablet being placed into the podium, which formally opens the world's most international stock market.

Following the ceremony, Dr Kotecha said:

“It was a real honour to be able to open the markets at the London Stock Exchange, which is such an historic, cultural and financial pillar of global trade.

“Businesses throughout the world know of the stock exchange and its key role in being at the heart of the City and UK’s thriving Financial Services sectors. It was great to be a part of the stock exchange’s market opening tradition.”

Dr Kotecha was asked to open the market after winning the national Entrepreneur of the Year Award, at the Lloyds Bank National Business Awards, in November.

The judges were impressed with his history of innovating to grow his businesses and clear philosophy of learning every part of his companies in detail, while building a team around him, and then moving onto his next challenge.

This has led to Dr Kotecha growing Morningside Pharmaceuticals from a garage start-up in the 1990s to one of the Midlands’ leading life sciences businesses, as well as to other investment banking and philanthropic ventures.
