Newby Castleman trainees make exam results count

Three trainees at leading Leicestershire-based accountancy firm Newby Castleman are well on their way to becoming chartered accountants after achieving exemplary results in their recent exams.

All three are based at Newby Castleman’s Leicester office and are studying an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) course, which requires aspiring financial professionals to undertake a mixture of audit, tax, accounts and finance modules along with three years of work experience.

24-year-old Rebecca Chandler sat two exams and attained scores of 92% in each, leaving her with just one more round of tests to pass in Autumn 2017 to become exam-qualified.

Matt Sweeney, 22, and Lois Mason, 27, also passed two exams each and both have two further modules to complete.

Rebecca, from Loughborough, began her accountancy career with Newby Castleman in 2015. She said: “I was very happy with the outcome of my latest exams and I am looking forward to completing the rest of my professional hours, along with the exams I still need to sit, in order to become fully qualified.

“I always had an interest in maths so accountancy felt like a logical fit. I’d encourage anyone who is thinking about their career options to consider accountancy as a profession.

“I am working in the audit department at Newby Castleman and developing a specialist expertise in that area which I hope will stand me in good stead once qualified.

“It’s a fantastic place to work, with regular social events and friendly atmosphere at the office.”

Leicester-born Matt has spent the past year with Newby Castleman working towards his ACA qualification. He passed both of his recent Professional level exams, the second of three levels included within the ACA course. He expects to become fully qualified in early 2019.

Matt said: “Having studied economics at the University of Leicester, I was delighted to have an opportunity to make the transition into professional life just around the corner from campus at Newby Castleman.

“I have always had a great interest in numbers when I was younger, and from a young age I associated that with accountancy. I am thrilled to be following a path I saw myself on from a young age.

“I have been made to feel so comfortable at Newby Castleman since day one, and my colleagues have been so helpful. I was starting in accountancy from scratch and am proud to have now reached a stage where I am providing them with some value.”

Lois, originally from Lancashire, has also spent one year working for the firm. She has four more Professional level exams to complete, in addition to three Advanced level papers.

She said: “I am pleased to be working with a vast array of talented minds at Newby Castleman. For me, the opportunity to get professional experience whilst studying for a qualification was one of the main appeals of studying to become an accountant.”

Stephen Castleman, Partner at Newby Castleman, said: “We strongly believe in giving talented individuals a platform to excel, gain skills and take the first steps on the ladder to a career in accountancy.

“The likes of Rebecca, Matt and Lois are the future of our profession and we are delighted that their hard work has been rewarded with positive exam results.

“At this time of year a number of young people entering their final year of education are beginning to think seriously about their next career steps. I hope the success that our trainees are enjoying serves as an inspiration to them and that accountancy will be in their thoughts as an option.”
