Breedon Consulting goes for growth with business expansion

Leicestershire-based HR firm, Breedon Consulting, is expanding its current business model with the growth of its client base and planned new locations on the horizon.

The multi-sector HR consultancy, based in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, has grown its client base by 30% in recent months, sparking plans for the firm to open offices in new locations across the Midlands and beyond.

Founded by Managing Director Nicki Robson in 1999, through her love of learning and development and a desire to train managers of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) on managing people better – Breedon Consulting was originally set up to provide training and development for companies in a wide range of sectors.

Following its inception, it was clear that SMEs were struggling to access good HR support and so Breedon’s offering extended to training managers and providing support for them on all HR-related matters.

In 2004, the company became incorporated and in 2013 current operations director, Bev Brady, joined the team assisting Nicki with the growth of the company to its current size.

Offering a wide range of services to clients of all sizes across multiple sectors, turnover has tripled since the expansion of services in 2016 and the company’s client base has grown organically through referrals from longstanding clients and contacts made via strategic partners.

Breedon’s longest standing clients have been with the company for over 20 years and include businesses in the energy, finance and scientific industries.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the consultancy offered free HR advice to business owners to help them navigate the crisis, providing guidance on HR legislation and the Government Job Retention Scheme (Furlough Scheme), to support businesses during challenging times.

Still offering free advice via group webinars, providing the initial free HR support has really demonstrated to companies the commercial benefit of having solid regular HR support in place, and business owners have had a chance to see the value of a long-term HR partner, which has resulted in an influx of new enquiries and clients to the firm since July.

The increase in its client base has spurred the firm on to look into opportunities to bring in new partners, to continue offering support to businesses in other UK locations, and the company has its sights set on further expansion across the Midlands region.

On the current success of the business and its future growth, managing director, Nicki Robson, said:

“We are incredibly proud of our hardworking and tenacious team who have pulled together to work through this period, offering much-needed services to clients and businesses in need, and we are very pleased to be welcoming new clients onboard, to offer consistent, accessible services that are bespoke to needs at this current time.

“Planning for what comes next is absolutely pivotal as we continue to navigate this pandemic and the ‘new normal’, and most business owners are facing some of the most challenging times in the history of business.

“There is a tangible commercial benefit to receiving proper HR advice regularly compared to seeking it out reactively, and talking through options with a specialist sooner rather than later is especially important as there are usually more options available than people realise. Talking through these and the different avenues open to business owners sooner rather than later ensures that plans can be made and appropriate action can be taken, which is likely to be less costly.

“With this increase in demand, we are considering our position within the market and are looking into other Midlands locations for the future to continue to service our clients and offer support for companies in need, initially we are looking at Leicester as our first location."

Breedon Consulting works closely with its clients to become a part of their management teams, providing a team of skilled HR specialists, rather than a faceless agency, who are on hand as and when needed, taking the stress of people management away and developing high performing teams.

Services at the firm have expanded in recent years to provide an integrated approach to people management and Nicki and her team focus on what businesses want to achieve and help them to get there.
