Cycling Challenge Flies the Flag For Derbados

Two Derby businessmen have once more laid down the gauntlet for others to join them for a weekend cycling challenge in Mallorca and Derbyshire in April – and brought their Olympian friends to Derby’s iPro stadium to formally launch the challenge.

Dean Jackson, founder and owner of triathlon kit specialists HUUB, and David Torrington, managing director of Sky Recruitment Solutions are planning the 200km challenge on April 16 and 17.

They invited Professor Greg Whyte OBE, the performance expert who has supported celebrities in their Sport relief challenges, alongside Henri Schoeman Commonwealth Games triathlon champion and Olympic Bronze medallist, to formally launch the Derbados2020 Cycling Challenge shared their tips for success.

Everyone taking part in Derbados2020 will be asked to raise money for two Derby causes - Derbyshire Institute of Sport, which supports athletes to become world class, and Annabel’s Angels, which provides financial assistance to local people undergoing cancer treatment.

For those people unable to cycle in Spain, a Derby-based cycling sportive will be held on April 17 at Carsington Water, sponsored by Raleigh and Knights Solicitors.

Led by Annabel’s Angels and Derbyshire Institute of Sport, riders can cycle, either individually or as part of a four-strong team – covering the same distance as the Mallorca crew on a dedicated route at Carsington using road bikes, mountain bikes, e-bikes or static bikes with prizes awarded for special achievements.

Pride of place for the team in Mallorca will be the Derbados flag - in support of Derby-based Team Huub/Wattbike who have taken the sport by storm – beating some of the top international track pursuit teams under the self-styled flag.

Dean Jackson explained:

“This is our Olympian challenge for 2020 and the perfect way to encourage people to get back into shape.

“This is about using sport to get fitter, raise money and spread the word of Derbados being the new cycling capital of the UK – if not the world!”

David Torrington continued:

“I hope that the Derby business community in particular will get right behind us to support two amazing Derby-based causes and have some fun in the sun at the same time.”

Simon Hancox, Chair of Annabel’s Angels said

“Annabel’s Angels is a volunteer-led Derby charity and once again we are so very proud to be part of Derbados 2020.  Without such fundraising events we couldn’t support the local families and individuals with cancer at a time they need us the most.  We are really looking forward to being part of this challenge.”

Chloe Maudsley from Derbyshire Institute of Sport said

“We want to inspire people to be part of this year’s Olympic Games, cycling 200km in 2020 to raise £20,000 for two very important causes in Derbyshire.  I really hope the community in Derbyshire get behind this and we are particularly keen that businesses take up the challenge, supporting their staff to become involved. “
