intu Derby donates £2,000 to Treetops Hospice Care as part of charity awards

One of the Midland’s most popular shopping centres, intu Derby, has donated £2,000 to Treetops Hospice Care to support the charity’s 2020 activities.

The money has been donated through intu’s annual Chairman’s Corporate Responsibility (CR) Prize, which celebrates and recognises the independent charity work completed by intu shopping destinations across the country, throughout the previous year.

intu Derby scooped a runner up prize thanks to its participation in Treetops Hospice Care’s annual Starlight Strut, Derby’s biggest night-time charity walk. In May, the shopping destination offered to host the start and end the walk, and 27 intu Derby staff volunteers helped to manage the event.

The £2,000 will contribute to the purchase of new equipment to support the hospice’s fundraising event plans for the rest of the year.

The relationship between intu Derby and Treetops Hospice Care will continue in 2020 and the centre has committed to helping generate double the number of walkers to 1,000 at this year’s Starlight Strut.

Treetops Hospice Care provides emotional support and nursing care for adults with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart failure. As well as providing expert palliative care, the charity also gives support to patients’ families and carers.

Lorraine Ray, event fundraiser lead at Treetops Hospice Care, said:

“Thanks to the generous support we’ve received from intu Derby, we are now able to update our event equipment to help make this year’s Starlight Strut bigger and better than ever.

“All of the services we provide are free, so it’s vital that we fundraise as much as possible during these events, which is why relationships like the one we have with intu Derby are invaluable.”

Adam Tamsett, general manager at intu Derby, said: “Supporting charities and organisations in and around Derby is one of the main ways we give back to our local community.

“The work that Treetops Hospice Care does for its patients is irreplaceable and we’re committed to helping make sure it continues its great work in 2020 by our staff volunteering and donating funds like the one through intu’s Chairman’s Prize.”
