Local charity receives lasting touch from Queen Elizabeth II with Platinum Jubilee Award.

On Wednesday September 7th, Deputy Lieutenant of Leicestershire Libbie Turnbull visited the offices of Hope Against Cancer, Leicestershire & Rutland’s local cancer research charity, to deliver an award on behalf of the Lord Lieutenant, Mike Kapur, recognising the charity’s exceptional and positive contribution to the local community.

Hope Against Cancer has been working for almost twenty years to fund a number of significant initiatives in collaboration with Leicester University and the Leicester Hospitals; their achievements have included the seed-funding of a number of research projects which have gone on to national and international recognition as breakthroughs in the fight against cancer and, most tangibly, the funding of the world-standard Hope Cancer Trials Centre at the Leicester Hospitals, where thousands of Leicestershire and Rutland patients living with cancer have been offered new pathways to better outcomes, improved quality of life and even survival of different cancers.

This was an award commemorating Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, and Mrs. Turnbull made clear in her short speech to the charity staff the connection to Her Late Majesty through her direct appointment of the Lord Lieutenant. It was most appropriate for Mrs. Turnbull to present the award to the charity management as she has herself been a volunteer at Hope since its foundation in 2003.

Pride and joy in the award was muted by the terrible sadness of the news of Her Majesty’s death the very next day, but CEO Nigel Rose says that everyone involved in Hope Against Cancer is now even more determined to continue, strengthen and expand their fundraising work.

“The Platinum Jubilee celebrated Her Late Majesty’s lifetime of service and achievements on behalf of the nation, and it is all we can now do to dedicate ourselves to further achievement in her memory”.

The charity now plans to display the award in a case commemorating Her Late Majesty in the waiting area of the Hope Cancer Trials Centre, communicating to patients, their relatives and, not least the staff of the Centre, the incredible value of the work brought to life there.
