Hope keeps building as additional funding is made available

Hope Against Cancer, the Leicestershire and Rutland based Cancer charity, have just been able to release another £50,000 of funding to five vital projects across the region.

This latest, life-saving sum has only been made possible through the kind donations and hard work of Hope’s dedicated supporters and fundraisers, who continuously amaze with their determination and achievements – especially in the midst of what has been recognised as a very challenging time for charities in general.

The five individual £10,000 pots of funding are being directed to projects that could lead to new developments in Cancer drugs and therapies, in line with Hope’s goal to improve treatment and outcomes for patients now and into the future.

Hope Against Cancer will be working with their doctors, professors and other research staff, carefully allocating this new funding to provide specialist research equipment and resources in a number of specific, identified areas. The projects to benefit from the £50,000 pot include the development of a liquid biopsy approach to early detection of head and neck Cancers, the evaluation of drug effectiveness in breast Cancers, the advancement of drugs for Mesothelioma prevention to clinical trials stage, the identification of difunctional cells in patients with Lymphoma and, finally, the therapeutic screening of patients with colorectal Cancers.

One of the ultimate aims of this crucial targeted funding is that it will result in the availability of new drugs and improved treatments which can be trialled at the Hope Cancer Trials Centre, their state-of-the art facility based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Nigel Rose, CEO of Hope Against Cancer, is delighted with the fact that this new, significant funding has been enabled. He told us:

“The areas receiving our funding are what we refer to as ‘pump-priming projects'.

They are the beginnings of new approaches which explore the understanding of cancers, a step which is vital if we are to develop better treatments.
Unfortunately it’s not always easy to find funding for these early stages, so the £50,000 will actually be helping our partners to expand knowledge and test ideas that they otherwise would be unable to do.

It is the Hope supporters and fundraisers across the region who deserve the greatest thanks for enabling this essential research to happen, allowing us to continue our local fight against Cancer.”
