News release: £250K awarded to Nottingham College to give young people life-changing work experiences abroad

Up to 100 students from Nottingham College will be given once in a lifetime overseas work experience opportunities thanks to the College’s success in attracting over £250K in funding from the Turing Scheme.

The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s global programme to study and work abroad. The scheme provides funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world.

Supporting the government’s Global Britain objectives, the Turing Scheme unlocks the opportunity for UK education providers to offer life-changing experiences across the world for their students.

The College has been awarded funding to widen overseas opportunities for its further education (FE) students and participants can apply to travel and learn in a vast range of truly inspiring environments and organisations, including an elephant sanctuary in Thailand and in the creative industries in Spain.

The Turing Scheme is backed by £110 million, providing funding for around 35,000 students in universities, colleges and schools to go on placements and exchanges overseas, starting in September 2021 with visits being planned from the start of 2022.

The new scheme will also target students from disadvantaged backgrounds and areas, making life-changing opportunities accessible to everyone across the country.

The Turing Scheme was named in honour of the renowned scientist Alan Turing. This pioneering and iconic British mathematician and computer scientist of global renown excelled academically and studied abroad at Princeton University.

This scheme, which honours his legacy, will provide opportunities for future generations of British students, from all backgrounds, to study and work abroad across the globe.

Martin Sim, interim Chief Executive of Nottingham College said:

“This is fantastic news and we’re delighted that our college is able to broker such life-changing opportunities for our students. More so than ever, our students may find themselves working overseas or, due to changes in working practices, working for international companies from home. Exposure to other countries, other economies and diverse cultures can be truly inspiring and career-defining. These opportunities will equip our students with new skills, greater awareness and experience and above all, confidence to go out there and find opportunities to make their mark in the world.”

Nottingham College submitted a bid to the scheme under the Further Education and Vocational Training strand. It means that 100 or so students will be able to travel and learn abroad with funding provided to offset costs. All faculties/subject areas within the college can take advantage of the opportunities on offer.

They include:

  •           Retail and marketing in France and the Netherlands
  •           Animal Management in Thailand
  •           Science and STEM in Nepal
  •           Arts, Fashion and Design in Spain
  •           Media in Germany
  •           Range of work based learning projects in Italy

The scheme is open for all FE students of Nottingham College from this September.
