Hinckley Ladies Circle celebrates 70th anniversary by supporting Lamp as its charity of the year

Members will raise funds for mental health charity by walking the equivalent of John O’Groats to Lands End

Hinckley Ladies Circle has selected Lamp (Leicestershire Action for Mental Health Project) as its charity of the year. As part of its 70th anniversary, Hinckley Ladies Circle will be raising funds for the charity by walking the equivalent of John ‘O Groats to Lands End in June.

The walk was inspired by members of Hinckley Ladies Circle taking part in the Lamp 5k challenge during Mental Health Awareness Week (10-16 May 2021), which encouraged people to walk, run, cycle or swim 5km to highlight the benefits physical activity has on mental health. Using this as a ‘warm up’, the ladies have set themselves the challenge of collectively walking more than two million steps and hope to raise £500 for Lamp.

Donations can be made to the fundraiser at www.gofundme.com and searching Hinckley Ladies Circle.

Lamp, which helps people access mental health services, has reported an upsurge in demand for its helpline, advocacy services and online resources during the Covid-19 pandemic. Lamp’s average number of monthly calls had doubled by October 2020.

Gemma Gardner, member of the Hinckley Ladies Circle said:

“We’re delighted to support the important work that Lamp do and work with them as our charity of the year, in our prestigious 70th year.

“After taking part in the Lamp5k challenge, we wanted to do something a bit more challenging to raise money for the charity, a cause that means so much to Hinckley Ladies Circle. So, throughout June, myself and three others will be collectively walking the 2,320,572 steps. We’d be really grateful for all support, which will help Lamp continue to support people with mental health needs.”

Matt Barton, Operations Officer at Lamp added:

“With demand for mental health services at a real high following the pandemic lockdowns, the support of groups such as the Hinckley Ladies Circle is vital in helping us to deliver the vital services required by our users. We look forward to working with them as their charity of the year and wish them every success for the fundraising walk.”
