NOTTS LAW FIRM KICKS OFF NEW YEAR BY RAISING FOUR FIGURES FOR CHARITY

LEADING city centre law firm Nelsons has kicked off a new year of supporting local causes by completing its own January team challenge to raise money for its 2021 nominated charities.

Every year, employees vote to select the charities they wish to back and this year, staff at the firm’s Nottingham office, based in Pennine House on Stanford Street, chose to support Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre.

During the final two weeks of January, six teams pitted themselves against each other to see who could walk, run or cycle the most miles in just 14 days – with the law firm totting-up 4,100 miles and raising more than £1,450 for its nominated charities.

Stewart Vandermark, chief executive at Nelsons, said:

“It’s been almost a year since all three of our offices in Nottingham, Leicester and Derby closed, with staff continuing to work from home due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, supporting local charities has, and always will be, something that’s incredibly close to our heart at Nelsons and we’ve made sure to keep that momentum going, even in lockdown.

“Last year, employees participated in a number of events to raise money, from taking part in the #DressWithAnEgg campaign at Easter to completing the 100 Miles in May challenge, and 2021 is set to be no different.

“After a challenging start to the year due to the country being placed into its third national lockdown, we wanted to encourage our employees to get active as part of the first fundraiser for our nominated charities – but with a little bit of friendly competition for good measure.”

The Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre (NBCRC), based at the University of Nottingham, aims to raise awareness of breast cancer and the research being conducted locally to combat it. The centre relies on fundraising income to help support its research into three key areas: detect it early, stop the spread and treat it right, and is currently looking into developing novel therapies in the fight against the disease.

Professor Stewart Martin, director at NBCRC, said:

“Every penny donated to us goes towards funding support and research and, while Covid-19 has had an impact, we’ve adapted to new ways of working to ensure the research continues to progress.

“As we get no financial support from any formal organisation, we’re entirely reliant on our friends, patients and supporters to keep us afloat. Therefore, we’re excited and honoured to have been chosen as Nelsons’ nominated charity for 2021, every penny helps and we can’t thank everyone enough for their generosity.”

Stewart added:

“I’m always overwhelmed at the number of members of our team who get involved with our fundraising activities, and this time was no different. January can often be a tough month, even without a national lockdown, so it was lovely to see a real sense of community and team spirit as everyone sent photo updates of their progress. As always, we’re already having conversations about what our next fundraiser will be and can’t wait to continue to support our nominated charities for 2021.”

Nelsons has also chosen to support the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group and Safe and Sound – its nominated charities for Leicester and Derby respectively. Last year, Nelsons staff chose to support Pintsize Theatre, LOROS Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society, raising a total of £5,310 for the charities.
