Made up of the Burton Addiction Centre and the O’Connor Gateway Charitable Trust, the charity - based in Burton-upon-Trent – has supported hundreds of people with inpatient detoxification, residential rehabilitation, semi-independent recovery housing and recovery services in the community.
Harry George, a Senior Architectural Technician at Barratt and David Wilson Homes, nominated the charity as part of his employer’s Community Fund scheme and visited the charity to present them with the cheque for £1,000.
Donna Meredith-Wood, Director of Business Development at BAC O’Connor, said:
“We were delighted when Barratt and David Wilson Homes got in touch to say that we had been nominated to receive the donation.
“We all work in this field because we want to support others to move into abstinent recovery and turn their lives around after the misery of addiction has affected them and their families so deeply.
“Our social enterprise, Langan’s Tea Rooms, has been devastated by the Covid-19 pandemic and whilst we have worked really hard to develop our delivery and takeaway service, the income from Langan’s has of course been affected drastically this year.
“The donation will help to sustain the social enterprise through the coming challenging months so that we can continue to offer training, volunteering and employment to people in early abstinent recovery during this difficult time.”
The Burton Addiction Centre was set up in 1998 by Noreen Oliver MBE after her own personal experience of addiction to ensure more people had the opportunity to access rehab and move into abstinent recovery.
BAC O’Connor has a range of objectives including:
1. Provide resources and tools to manage holistic health and wellbeing
2. Provide training in independent living skills so that beneficiaries live an independent life and become contributing community members
3. Provide workshops, training and education
4. Provide volunteering and paid employment for people in recovery to build confidence, skills and work readiness
5. To manage mental health and reduce the risk of relapse
A significant number of the charity’s team have had personal experience of substance misuse addiction themselves, which showcases just what is possible upon completion of its programme.
Mark Cotes, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Midlands, said:
“During times like this, it’s important for communities to come together to support those in need and we’re delighted to have the opportunity to help BAC O’Connor through our Community Fund scheme.
“There are many people in need of extra support, especially during such a difficult time, and the efforts of the team at the charity are extremely admirable.”
