Kit company helps national squad skate in style

A sports kit specialist has renewed its association with a national roller derby team, revamping their uniforms for the 2020 World Cup in July.

Leicester-based GFORCE Sportswear has again created and sponsored an all-new look for the England men’s squad, with help from players and team manager Chrissy Andrews.

The sponsorship package includes 66 shirts for the squad, which will be launched at the international Continental Showdown tournament in Newcastle, later this month.

Roller derby is a contact sport which sees teams of five roller skaters battle their way around an oval track, scoring points by lapping their opponents while stopping them doing the same.

Chrissy said:

“We are hoping to place first in Newcastle, although the focus this year is going to be on preparing for the World Cup in July.

“England will be going into their fourth World Cup and, having taken silver at each previous tournament, this time we’re going for gold.

“We are confident we have selected the best this country has to offer. The talent within our squad really is exceptional and we are very proud of all who have been selected.”

Still outside mainstream sport, many roller derby players have to fund their own kits and equipment; backing from GFORCE allows the England squad to put aside more cash for reaching the World Cup in St Louis, USA.

Chrissy added:

“Support from sponsors with things like shirts or equipment make the sport more accessible for everyone, which is something we want to promote wherever possible.

“Specifically, the support we have received from GFORCE means we know we are going into the tournaments with reliable, high performance shirts that will help us play at our best.

“It’s important for a national team to lead from the front and present a squad that looks professional at all times, matching the standard of our gameplay.”

GFORCE Sportswear first became involved with English roller derby in 2017, creating a brand new uniform for the 2018 World Cup, which saw the team finish second.

The garments were printed using innovative dye sublimation; a process which effectively tattoos inks into the fabric, allowing complete customisation of colours, patterns and logos.

Group sales director Simon Ward said:

“We are very proud to continue our association with the successful England side. Roller derby is such an exciting sport; one that the GFORCE team had come to be real fans of.”

He added: “It is always good to see GFORCE kit being used by a national team, and we look forward to working with England Men’s Roller Derby through 2020 and beyond.”
