Leading developer's donation helps young people in Northampton

David Wilson Homes South Midlands has donated funds to a charity supporting young people in Northampton with additional needs.

The £1,000 donation is part of the housebuilder’s Community Fund initiative in which money is donated to local causes seeking to strengthen ties with communities local to the developments.

CANTO Learning was established in 1992 and seeks to encourage young people (aged 14 plus) who have additional needs to engage in their local community by providing them with a range of training and guidance needed to learn new skills.

Monique Heron, Assistant Head of Centre at CANTO Learning, said:

“The young people that we work with often feel that they are solely reliant on other people. We strive to empower them in such a way that they can actively make a positive contribution to their local community.”

One of the ways in which the organisation does this is by helping young people to create a small haven for wildlife in the CANTO garden, including homes for endangered native wildlife such as hedgehogs. They show the young people how to recycle old wooden pallets from local businesses to create items such as hedgehog houses, insect houses, bird feeders, bat boxes and planters, in a newly constructed work centre on site.

Monique continued:

“We were delighted to receive this generous donation from David Wilson Homes. We are constantly looking for ways to raise funds to support the work that we do.

“Our entire team work tirelessly to help improve the lives of the young people in our care and to have the importance of what we are doing recognised by being awarded this community funding is fantastic.

“The money donated will go towards updating the facilities in our on-site flat where we teach independence skills as well as other projects that we are working on.”

John Dillon, Managing Director of David Wilson Homes South Midlands, said:

“We are thrilled to be supporting a cause that is directly helping young people in the local community.

“We are committed to creating a positive legacy. We want to be known not just for the quality of the homes and developments we build, but also for our commitment to the local community through supporting local organisations such as CANTO Learning.”
