Children’s heart charity receives boost from housebuilder

A donation has been made to Heart Link Children’s Charity to improve medical facilities for children born with heart defects.

Leicester-based housebuilder Bellway East Midlands has donated £250 towards the charity, which is located at Glenfield Hospital on Groby Road. The money will be put towards new hospital equipment.

Gill Smart, who has been a treasurer of Heart Link since the charity was formed in 1981, said:

“The money that gets donated to us goes towards making the patients’ lives safer and better, and the families can’t be forgotten about either.

“There were no facilities for families at first, but now there are places for them to sleep and eat, because sometimes patients are in for weeks or months at a time.

“We’re very grateful for all donations we receive from the public and businesses. The generosity of people amazes me every time.”

Heart Link was originally created as a support group for parents and families who had a child suffering from a heart defect.

Nearly 40 years on, the charity has raised over £6 million which has gone into funding projects large and small – from pieces of medical equipment that cost as little as £20, to specialised ambulances that cost £100,000.

Sales Director for Bellway East Midlands, Carolyne Watkinson, said:

“Bellway is committed to helping out worthy causes in the local areas where we build new homes.

“Heart Link Children’s Charity does tremendous work and it’s great to be able to offer our support. We hope that our donation will help make a difference.”

Bellway’s East Midlands division is building new homes across Leicestershire including in Bottesford, Melton Mowbray, Waltham on the Wolds, Frisby on the Wreake, Heather, Donisthorpe, and Scraptoft.
