Local businessman honoured at 2019 Race Harborough Santa Run

An award commemorating the contribution that a Market Harborough businessman made to the local community was given out for the first time at this year’s Santa Fun Run in Market Harborough on 8th December.

Alastair Campbell (51) died in June this year, two years after a cardiac arrest left him severely brain damaged. Alastair, who set up and ran The Ideal Marketing Company in Harborough, played a significant role in helping the directors set up Race Harborough which runs events around the area such as the Tunnel Run and the Harborough Triathlon as well as the Santa Run.  Each event also raises money for local charities.

Brian Corcoran and Kenny Anderson of Race Harborough joined together with Ideal Marketing’s current owner Jess Shailes to create the award which will be given out annually to volunteers who deserve special recognition for the support that they offer at Race Harborough events.

“Alastair played a very important part in many community events and organisations and his support, enthusiasm, energy and marketing knowledge was immensely helpful when we were setting up Race Harborough back in 2014,” comments Brian.

“He was always happy to offer his time and help as he believed very strongly in the importance of keeping fit and healthy in a way that could be accessible to everyone."

The inaugural Alastair Campbell award went to Jo Howell for her outstanding contribution to Race Harborough events during 2019.  The award was presented to Jo at the Santa Run by Alastair’s wife Helen who also took part in the race for the first time in Alastair’s memory.

“Race Harborough couldn’t function without the support of people like Jo who turn out in all weather to help make these events run smoothly so it’s nice to be able to show how much we appreciate that support,” adds Brian.

Alastair was active in many other roles in the community, including setting up and running the Business Agenda and Working Breakfast not-for-profit networking groups for local businesses. He was also President of the Chamber of Commerce at the time of his cardiac arrest.

Alastair’s wife Helen was delighted to present the award saying:

“Having lived in Harborough for over 20 years, Alastair was always keen to try and give something back. He was also passionate about wellbeing in general and running in particular, so this award really sums up what he was all about. As his family, it is comforting to see that his impact and contribution has not been forgotten.”

This year’s Santa Run saw 400 Santas of all ages run a 2km or 5km circuit around Welland Park. The event raised around £1000 for local charities including the Squires Effect.
