Leics games room brought to life by Superheroes

Superheroes, Space Invaders and King Kong are just some of the much-loved children’s characters that have brightened up the walls of Leicester’s Highfields Adventure Playground – thanks to local law firm Nelsons.

A team of legal professionals from the firm’s Leicester office, in New Walk, helped transform the centre’s games room into a fun and vibrant space for local children.

The room, originally a deep purple colour, was painted white to brighten up it up. The team then spray-painted the mural, which features a smoky industrial city skyline and familiar children’s adventure characters. The foreground is filled with green leaves and foliage designed to reflect to the natural green environment of Spinney Hill Park, which is situated in the heart of urban Leicester.

Lewis Addison, partner and solicitor in the dispute resolution team at Nelsons, said:

“We were delighted to be able to work on a project that will have such a great impact on the lives of so many local children.”

The activity was flagged to Nelsons by Leicestershire Cares, which provides volunteering opportunities for companies looking to get involved with communities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Lewis added:

“Taking part in these challenges not only allows us to make a difference in the local community but also enables us to work on creative projects as a team.  We are committed to helping and supporting our local communities as much as we can, and Leicestershire Cares gives us a great opportunity to do that.”

The playground, based in Spinney Hill Park, opened in 1972 and has been a communal space for hundreds of local children between the ages of four and 14 to meet and play for more than 40 years.

As well as the outdoor jungle gym, zip wire and woodland areas, Highfields Adventure Playground is home to indoor activities including arts, crafts and games. The centre also runs afterschool clubs and holiday playschemes, which operate throughout the year.

Kevin Sherriff, manager at Highfields Adventure Playground, said:

“We are thrilled with the rejuvenation of the games room and would like to offer a sincere thank you to Nelsons and Leicestershire Cares for working together to create such an incredibly fitting piece. The mural will be enjoyed by many generations of children to come and the team should be really proud of what they’ve produced.”

Nelsons has been involved with Leicestershire Cares for a number of years, having been awarded the Long Service Award at the annual Leicestershire Cares Awards Evening in 2017.  Teams have previously completed a mural on the walls of the Northfields Play Barn and transformed a community centre at the Centre Project in Leicester.

Raheema Caratella, community development coordinator at Leicestershire Cares, said:

“The games room – which is well used by so many local Leicestershire children – was well overdue a revamp. The Nelsons team gave the games .0room a huge makeover through an inspired and creative mural, which I’m sure the children will love. We would like to thank everyone at Nelsons who made the challenge possible, as well as the team who transformed the room.”
