Apprenticeship support grants available for employers

Apprenticeship support grants available for employers

The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on the way many organisations work and Government support is available to help organisations adapt and plan for the future.

Incentive payments of up to £2,000 are available to support employers who hire new apprentices. This includes hiring redundant apprentices.

The Government investment is part of a wider economic plan to help avoid high unemployment levels following coronavirus.

It commits the Government to the creation of 30,000 new traineeships as well as new financial incentives for employers taking on new trainees and apprentices.

For traineeships, firms can access grants of £1,000 towards funding a traineeship for a young person aged between 16 and 24.

And for apprenticeships, a £2,000 incentive is on offer to companies offering an apprenticeship to a new recruit aged between 16 and 24.

The payment is in addition to the existing incentive of £1,000 per 16 - 18 year-old (or per 19 - 24 year old care leaver). A £1,500 incentive is being offered where the apprentice is over the age of 25.

A portal has been set up on the website to enable employers to advertise their apprenticeship opportunities, and recruit apprentices who have been made redundant.

The portal will share your details with apprentices who are interested in your opportunity, so they can contact you directly.

Apprentices who have been made redundant may already have the knowledge, skills and behaviours to add value to your organisation.

The benefits of hiring apprentices include:

  • Gaining a quick return on investment from work-ready apprentices who already have relevant skills and experience
  • Filling key skill gaps in your organisation or your existing apprenticeship vacancies
  • Helping young people to continue their development and build on their existing skills
  • Supporting people who have lost their jobs with a new employment opportunities.
