Ibstock shortlisted for two edie Sustainability Leaders Awards 2020

Ibstock plc has been shortlisted in two categories for the edie Sustainability Leaders Awards 2020.

The market leading manufacturer of innovative clay and concrete building products will go up against nine other businesses – many of whom are global brands - in the Energy Efficiency category whilst Group Sustainability Manager Michael McGowan has been shortlisted in the Energy Management Leader of the Year category, sponsored by the Energy Institute.

To have reached the EDIE Energy Efficiency Award shortlist, judges from the worlds of commerce and environmental best practice, will have been impressed by Ibstock’s steps to use and manage energy and natural resources more efficiently across its estate. For example, the new Eclipse brick factory in Leicestershire is the culmination of Ibstock’s achievements. It has enabled the organisation to test new ideas and technologies, with best practice then being implemented across the other 37 factories within the Group. As evidence of its commitment to low carbon and energy saving initiatives, on average it now takes almost 65% less energy to make a brick than was the case in the 1970s.

As Group Sustainability Manager, Michael McGowan has been instrumental in driving Ibstock’s sustainability strategy, playing a key role in the development and launch of the Group’s Sustainability Roadmap 2025. This key document communicates clear targets for the business – each of which falls under four core objective areas: Customers and Suppliers, People, Environment and Communities.

Joe Hudson, Chief Executive Officer of Ibstock PLC, commented:

“As an organisation that is committed to sustainable methods of manufacturing I am delighted that we have been shortlisted for these prestigious sustainability awards. Our focus has been on making investments that will drive our business forward and as a result we are well placed to minimise our impact on the environment. Our Sustainability Road Map to 2025 presents a clear pathway towards greater sustainability across our business, and ensures a positive impact, not only on our business performance but on those around us.”

The edie Sustainability Awards, co-ordinated by leading environmental publisher edie.net, are the UK’s largest and most prestigious sustainability awards, recognising excellence across the spectrum of green business. Ibstock Brick was the winner of the Energy Efficiency category at the 2019 awards.

The winners will be announced on February 5 2020.
