Double delight as Croots Farm Shop scores success in the Great Taste Awards 2018

Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire is celebrating after two of its products were hailed as ‘outstanding’ at the annual Great Taste Awards.

Croots Sausage Roll and Croots Old Goat Ale were both awarded two-star accolades in the awards, which are widely regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world and the ‘epicurean equivalent of the Booker prize’.

Organised by the Guild of Fine Food, the awards attracted more than 12,500 entries. Fewer than 15% of products achieved two stars and earned the description of ‘outstanding…above and beyond delicious’.

Steve Croot, who runs the farm shop at Duffield with his wife Kay, said:

“We are super delighted that two more Croots Farm Shop products have won Great Taste Awards. To receive a two-star rating for each is brilliant.

“Croots Sausage Roll is made on the premises, while the Croots Old Goat Ale is made for us by Tollgate Brewery at Calke, south of Derby. Both are very popular here at the farm shop.

“Over several years, we have won at least 23 Great Taste Awards, which is a reflection of the quality of the food and drink we produce, sell and serve at Croots Farm Shop.”

One set of judges said of the sausage roll:

“We all agreed it was great to see a nice traditional shape, a proper big sausage roll. The aroma when cut was appetising, and the pastry was well cooked with no sogginess. The sausage filling was as good as the excellent flaky pastry. We really enjoyed this as an honest tasty sausage roll.”

Another group said:

“Well glazed and a good baked colour. Pastry looks flaky and is good to eat. Light and buttery and crisp. Well flavoured and textured sausage. The total eat is really good.”

The Old Goat Ale – part of a collection of Croots ales – also came in for praise, with the judges saying:

“A pleasing reddish brown coloured ale. On the palate, notes of pear on the finish, very well-made and complex. Plenty of fruit and roasted barley on the mid-palate. Stimulated a lot of discussion. Very satisfying and well-made. Interesting beer.”

Croots Farm Shop, which is based at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, is this year celebrating its tenth anniversary. It has won scores of awards for a wide range of food and drink products produced on the premises including sausages, meat products, pies, pastries, oils and other items.

Steve Croot was named Derbyshire Local Food Hero 2014 at the Derbyshire Food and Drink Awards and in the 2016 Derbyshire Life Food and Drink Awards, Croots won the accolade of Outstanding Ambassador for Local Produce in Derbyshire. Last year, Croots also won the People’s Choice in the Midlands Award in the Family United Business Awards.

Croots Farm Shop is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (Shires Eatery until 4.30pm) and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Croots runs Fresh Fish Thursdays between 9am and 1pm on Thursdays.
