Homebuilder invests £1,500 in Leicestershire childrens's safety

A Leicestershire charity offering children essential skills and vital safety messages has received a £1,500 from a housebuilder.
Warning Zone was given the donation by Coalville-based David Wilson Homes, helping to offset the costs for Year 6 pupils’ visits to the centre on Frog Island in Leicester.
Schools are charged £14 per head for the essential visits but it actually costs the charity £48 per head to run the experiences. The £1,500 donation from the five-star developer will go towards balancing these costs.
Richard Grudgings, Fundraising Manager at Warning Zone, said:
“Our work is vital in keeping the children in our community safe, both on and off-line in Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and the surrounding counties.
“We give schools a perfect platform to present the Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) curriculum, by offering visual learning without the need of pens and paper.
“The dangers of children using construction sites as a playground is a common theme that we discuss in our ‘Electricity and Building Site Zone’. There is still a major problem of children getting seriously injured or in some cases dying from playing in these areas and it is good to see a building company supporting the work we do to tackle this danger.”
Warning Zone started in 2006 and was originally based in Syston, before moving to its present base on Frog Island. It now has over 11,500 Year 6 pupils aged 10 and 11 visiting the centre each year.
What was once a half day visit is now a full day featuring a wide range of services, including the traditional safety messages such as fire risk in the home, electricity and buildings, alcohol, personal safety, water safety, arson, road safety and railway safety.
Warning Zone has also now incorporated e-safety, tackling issues such as grooming, understanding a digital footprint, cyber bullying and phishing. Plans are also in place to introduce talks surrounding gambling harm and violence against young women and girls.

“The aim of the charity has always been to keep the young people in our community out of the criminal justice system and away from the hospital accident and emergency departments.
“We have started to take our Roadcrew Team into various businesses to discuss with staff about how to keep their children safe online and this is also being rolled out to parents at various schools.”
The donation was made as part of David Wilson Homes’ Community Fund scheme via The Barratt Redrow Foundation, which is run by its parent company, Barratt Redrow. The initiative is designed to support national and local charities, large and small, across the UK, leaving a lasting legacy in the communities where the housebuilder operates.
The Barratt Redrow Foundation is celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2026. Since its launch, it has committed £20 million to charities and good causes, supported over 2,000 different charities, and is estimated to have directly impacted 100,000 young people each year.
