National Allotment Society launches new children’s book to inspire the next generation of growers

The National Allotment Society has launched a new picture book to encourage young children to discover where their food comes from and learn to love their vegetables along the way.
Harry, Charlie and Sophia’s Adventure, written by the Society’s Marketing & PR Officer Charlotte Watts, follows siblings Harry and Charlie, who are less than enthusiastic when it comes to eating their vegetables at home.
Aimed at children aged four to six, the story takes readers on an adventure to an allotment where the children, along with their cousin Sophia, discover that growing food can be exciting, rewarding and fun.
At the heart of the story is the importance of giving every child the opportunity to develop the skills needed to grow food, and that you don’t need a big garden to do so.
Author of the book, Charlotte Watts said:
“The book is actually based on a story that I used to tell my boys when they were little!
“We hear all too often about children being reluctant to try vegetables, so I wanted to create a story that introduced them to the joy of growing their own food in a fun and accessible way.
“By understanding where food comes from and having the confidence to grow and try it themselves, children gain knowledge and skills they can carry with them throughout their lives. The great thing is that you don’t need acres of land to get started.
“Whether it’s an allotment, a small garden, a balcony, windowsill or community growing space, children can enjoy the experience of growing food for themselves. Even growing a few herbs and vegetables in pots can give children that connection with food.”
Allotments provide an ideal setting for families to spend time outdoors, learn practical skills and discover the journey food takes from seed to plate. NAS hopes that the book will inspire families to get growing together and help children develop an early appreciation of fresh food, nature and the environment.
