Much-loved Brampton café Libby's reopens as Mary's Yard under new ownership

One of Brampton's best-known cafés has reopened under new ownership and a new name, with growing Sheffield hospitality brand Scrannery taking over The Café at Libby's and reopening the site as Mary's Yard.
For Scrannery, which was co-founded by local entrepreneurs, Dave King and Kieran Morgan-McGeehan, Mary's Yard becomes Scrannery's third new opening of 2026, following the launch of Discovery at Sheffield's Pennine Five campus and Nook & Scran at Chesterfield Library in March and April respectively.
Alongside a refreshed menu and café experience, Mary's Yard will continue to provide the everyday hospitality that has made the site a popular destination for the Brampton community for almost two decades.
Mary’s Yard will also continue to employ the same team that has become so well-recognised with local residents. Rather than replacing what came before, Scrannery intends to act as the site’s next custodian, preserving the warmth that made Libby’s special while carefully introducing its own approach to food, coffee, and hospitality over the coming months.
The name change pays tribute to Mary Smith, a pioneering local brewer from the 1800s whose brewery once stood nearby and was known as Brewery Yard.
As with Nook & Scran in Chesterfield, Mary’s Yard will serve specialty coffee from Redemption Roasters, the UK social enterprise that provides training and employment opportunities for people leaving prison and those at risk of offending. The partnership reflects Scrannery’s wider commitment to responsible employment and to working with local suppliers and social enterprises across every site.
Kieran Morgan-McGeehan, co-founder of Scrannery, added:
“Mary’s Yard feels like a natural next step for us in Derbyshire. We want it to feel as though it has always belonged to Brampton.
“Choosing a name rooted in Mary Smith’s story, working with local suppliers and continuing our partnership with Redemption Roasters are all part of making sure the café has a positive impact well beyond food and drink.”
Dave King, co-founder of Scrannery, said:
“Brampton already has something special in this café, and our job is to look after it. We’re not here to tear up what people love — the good coffee, brilliant menu, and friendly faces — we’re here to build on it and bring what has made Scrannery stand out to Brampton.
