During the final months of the academic year, social value colleagues from Nottingham-based Keepmoat, East Midlands, delivered a programme of employability and careers initiatives.
Working with eight education and community partners, the team supported hundreds of young people to gain a better understanding of the wide range of careers available within the housebuilding industry across a range of activities designed to build confidence, develop employability skills and showcase the variety of careers available.
Initiatives included speed networking sessions, mock interviews, careers fairs and work experience placements aimed to give students hands-on experience. Laura Grainger, Social Value Manager at Keepmoat East Midlands, explains:
"Working with eight education and community partners over just a few months demonstrates our continued commitment to supporting local young people and investing in the future workforce.
"At Keepmoat, we understand the construction industry faces a significant skills challenge, which is why it's so important that we engage with students early, helping them understand the breadth of opportunities available. Housebuilding isn't just about trades on site, there are careers in commercial, land, planning, sales, customer care, technical, design, social value and many other specialist areas.
"Whether we're delivering mock interviews, attending careers fairs, offering work experience or speaking to students about their future aspirations, every interaction is an opportunity to inspire someone to consider a career they may never have previously thought possible."
The activity forms part of the housebuilder's long-term commitment to support young people to understand future careers, whilst helping address the construction sector's growing skills shortage.
One student to benefit from the programme was Fikayo from Park Vale Academy, who completed a week-long work experience placement at Keepmoat's Faraday Fields development in Lenton.
During the placement, Fikayo gained first-hand experience across several departments, including Commercial, Customer Care, Land & Partnerships, Social Value and Sales, giving him an understanding of how different teams work together to deliver new homes and create thriving communities.
His placement included supporting a commercial cost-planning exercise, learning about customer care processes, completing a land appraisal project, attending a local careers event and observing live customer appointments with the sales team.
Reflecting on his experience, Fikayo said:
"I have really enjoyed my week. It's been very insightful and I didn't realise the amount of work that goes into submitting a bid for land. I've learned how all the different departments work together to build a house and provide excellent service throughout the customer's journey."
