Amazon Chesterfield team packs literacy kits for young readers

Amazon volunteers at the fulfilment centre in Chesterfield packed literacy kits filled with books and reading materials for local children as part of the ‘Reading is FUNdamental’ initiative and donated it to The West Midlands Multibank.

Each kit was designed to spark a love of reading and support children's educational development - particularly those from low-income households who may not have access to books at home. The kits were distributed to local schools and community organisations to help close the literacy gap through the West Midlands Multibank.

Russell Bodger, Site Leader at Amazon in Chesterfield, said:

“We’re happy to support the local community through this initiative. Reading has the power to open so many doors for young people, and supporting children in our community is something we feel strongly about.”

Brendan O’Driscoll, Manager from The West Midlands Multibank added:

"We are so grateful to the team at Amazon in Chesterfield for packing these literacy kits and supporting the West Midlands Multibank. Every book donated helps us reach children and families who need it most, and this kind of hands-on support makes a real difference to our communities."

Community donations and employee volunteering are just two of the ways Amazon supports the communities where it operates. Amazon co-founded the Multibank initiative with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown to support families in need. The initiative has donated more than 12 million surplus goods to over 800,000 families across Wales, Scotland, Greater Manchester, London, Tees Valley and Birmingham. This year, the Multibank will send 1 million orders to families across the UK.

Amazon has supported more than one million students across the UK with free STEM education programmes through Amazon Future Engineer and helps community organisations transport meals and other essentials to families in need through its pro bono logistics programme, Amazon Local Good.

Amazon partners with Comic Relief and is the official home of the charity's iconic Red Nose. Together with its employees, customers, and partners, Amazon has raised over £4.8 million to fund projects that support people across the UK, and around the world.

Amazon is also supporting the National Year of Reading, combining funding with real, on-the-ground impact. From AWS technology and nationwide logistics that distribute books to underserved communities, to Amazon Literacy Champions volunteering in local schools, Amazon is using its scale and expertise to help drive meaningful improvements in literacy across the UK.
