The Green Team: Lincolnshire school visits housebuilder's show home garden

Five-star homebuilder David Wilson Homes recently hosted Enfield Academy of New Waltham at its High Forest development for a tour of its show home garden.

In line with National Children’s Gardening Week (23rd – 31st May), David Wilson Homes invited pupils from Enfield Academy of New Waltham to visit its show home garden at High Forest.

During the visit, the pupils toured the garden and learned about the steps taken by the developer to create a wildlife-friendly environment.

David Wilson Homes has invited multiple schools across its operational areas of Lincolnshire, East Yorkshire and North Yorkshire visit local show homes and take part in the activities.

As well as touring the gardens, the pupils will also take part in a competition to design their own garden. The winning pupil will win a £50 gift voucher, and the winning school receiving £200 towards creating a wildlife-friendly garden at the school.

Mrs Johnson, Class Teacher at Enfield Academy of New Waltham, said:

“The children have thoroughly enjoyed their time on the visit looking at the wildlife friendly gardens. They love the idea of the hedgehog highway and I think many of them will be including them in their designs.”

Since 2014, the RSPB has been providing expertise to Barratt Redrow to help build homes and developments in a nature-friendly way, to inspire homeowners to support wildlife on their doorstep and to influence government and the wider sector to help nature thrive.

The partnership has already delivered significant results. Through the Nature on Your Doorstep initiative, people were encouraged to create a wildlife haven in their own outdoor spaces, using inspirational content, top tips and advice that was visited by over one and a half million unique users on the RSPB website. By writing landscaping and gardening guides, designing a new swift brick, and creating wildlife-friendly show home gardens, the partnership is working to set the benchmark for nature-friendly housing across the country.

During their visit to High Forest, the pupils were each given hi-vis safety vests and wildflower seeds to take home inspiring them to start their own gardens.

Daniel Smith, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Yorkshire East, said:

“We were delighted to host pupils from Enfield Academy of New Waltham at High Forest. We are excited to see the designs inspired by their visit to the show home garden.

“As a leading homebuilder, we are committed to creating green, environmentally friendly spaces at our developments. We hope that the visit and activities will foster a new generation that is environmentally conscious.”
