Mills & Reeve appointed to Nottingham Trent University legal framework

Mills & Reeve has been appointed to the Nottingham Trent University legal framework, strengthening its position in the higher education sector.

The firm is one of a small number of law firms chosen to join the multi-million pound framework for the provision of legal services.

The three-year framework will cover eight lots, including real estate, construction, human resources, dispute resolution, commercial and corporate, student matters and patent management. Mills & Reeve will provide support across all areas, apart from human resources and patent management.

Helen Tringham, partner at Mills & Reeve in the Midlands, said:

“We have worked alongside Nottingham Trent University for a number of years. Through our deep sector expertise and understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the higher education sector, we have built up a strong relationship with the university across a range of legal services. We’re delighted to have strengthened that partnership through the new framework agreement and look forward to working closely with Nottingham Trent over the next three years.”

Mills & Reeve has a Tier One education practice, with a particular focus on higher education. The team has worked on a number of high-profile cases and projects. These include supporting the University of York in establishing a new campus in Mumbai, India; acting on the merger of City, University London and St George’s, University of London; as well as advising the University of Sussex on a High Court judicial review to challenge a record £585,000 fine imposed by the Office for Students (OfS) in March 2025. The penalty stemmed from an investigation into the handling of gender-critical views, specifically related to former professor Kathleen Stock, with a decision expected shortly. The firm also works alongside the likes of the universities of Nottingham, Exeter and Southampton.

Martin Priestley, a partner who leads Mills & Reeve’s education sector team, said:

“We have built an enviable team of education specialists over many years, working on exciting and sector-defining work that is helping to shape how universities work together and operate – all set against a backdrop of financial uncertainty and a changing legislative environment.

“Our latest framework win demonstrates our strength and depth as a team and we are looking forward to continuing our strong relationship with NTU.”
