Exciting New Chapter for Former Managing Director

Exciting New Chapter for Former Managing Director

144-year-old Nottingham business Russell Scanlan is celebrating the career of its Non-Executive Director & Chairman, and former Managing Director Bryan Banbury, who retires at the end of this month (September 2025).

Celebrations include an evening event which took place at The Botanist in West Bridgford, with food, refreshments, and a chance to wish him well as he steps into an exciting new chapter.

Bryan has been a key part of the Russell Scanlan team since his arrival as Account Handler in 1988, managing the risk profiles, insurance policies and renewals for several long-standing clients.

Known for his relationship-building and leadership, Bryan’s 40-year career has taken him through many challenging climates for businesses, including the collapse of the Independent Insurance Co. and 9/11 in the early 2000s and, latterly, the global COVID pandemic.

Progressing up the ranks, Bryan was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2001 and then, in 2007, was made Managing Director following a successful management buyout – a position he held for and impressive 17 years.

Bryan has been instrumental in progressing many of Russell Scanlan’s regional charity partnerships and sponsorships in both his home county of Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. An avid cricket fan, he initiated the company’s relationship with Leicestershire County Cricket Club (predominantly through Player Sponsorship of wicketkeeper, Harry Swindells) and was responsible for corporate sponsorships with Trent Bridge Cricket Ground and Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. His significant presence within the sports venue sector has contributed greatly to the business’ specialisms.

Having been neighbours in Wellington Circus and long-term sponsors, Bryan regularly attended events at the Nottingham Playhouse, and fronted countless fundraising opportunities for the company’s Charities of the Year.

Mike Dickinson, Managing Director at Russell Scanlan, said:

“As our Managing Director, Bryan has been at the forefront of a lot of change and growth for us as a business. He knows exactly what makes a business successful, and his expertise has not just benefited the team here – but also, any client who has had the privilege of working with him.

“As a keen innovator, Bryan has always looked at how we can better harness technology and best practice. He has spearheaded many of our professional accreditations, from becoming a Chartered Insurance Broker in 2016 and being an active member of the UNA Alliance for independent brokers. We’re wishing him a very Happy Retirement and all the best for his next life chapter.”

Bryan said:

“It’s fair to say that I’m looking forward to the next chapter. Hopefully this will give me the opportunity to travel more, play golf and spend more time with my wife, Sue, and the family – especially our little grandson, Oliver.

“It’s been a rewarding career overall from 1980 to 2025, and the last few years have been particularly stimulating. Russell Scanlan has grown with the acquisition by Acrisure, and the future with the team in Nottingham is looking extremely positive.

“Russell Scanlan will always be very special to me and has been ever since I first met Bill Russell in 1988! I’ve made so many friends with the company and our professional associations like UNA, along with the insurers and clients as well.”
