East Midlands Institute of Technology heads to national conference

The East Midlands Institute of Technology is heading to the national 2025 conference of Institutes of Technology, ready to tell attendees about the great work happening in its region.

Around 140 delegates from across the country will be at the one-day National Network of Institutes of Technology national event tomorrow (Thursday July 3rd); to be held at the Central Hall Westminster, at the heart of London and UK Government.

England’s 21 Institutes of Technology ( www.institutesoftechnology.org.uk ) – set-up by the Department for Education, with support from The Gatsby Foundation (www.gatsby.org.uk/education ) – each covers a specific region. They are a partnership of higher / further education providers working with employers to develop skills in a range of technical sectors.

East Midlands Institute of Technology academic partners are the University of Derby, Derby College, Loughborough University and Loughborough College. Its business partners include Rolls-Royce, Toyota, Uniper and Bloc Digital.

We specialise in engineering, digital and professional construction courses; from T-levels to Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs), and degree to Masters courses.

The IoTs’ national conference will attract senior politicians and UK government officials, businesspeople, educators, students, and different industry experts as guests and speakers; who’ll hear how IoTs are driving innovation and economic growth through collaboration.

For example:

  • A £2million investment in new Future Energy Skills Hub (or FESH) courses by the East Midlands Freeport, aimed at developing high-tech skills in clean energy and decarbonisation needed for the economy’s future. Some courses will begin to be delivered by the East Midlands IoT’s partners from September (2025).
  • Over £12m invested in two new East Midlands IoT facilities at Derby College, already in operation, and Loughborough College, opening to students in September (2025); with state-of-the-art technical facilities and equipment. These add to the current IoT site used at the University of Derby Enterprise Centre.

Martin Rigley, Chair of the East Midlands IoT, said:

“We and our and IoT colleagues are working hard through partnerships to develop the high-quality technical skills the UK Government says are needed to support growth priorities; such as digital, engineering and professional construction.

“Thursday’s national event is an opportunity to show our progress and learn from other IoTs.”

Rachel Quinn, Executive Director of the East Midlands IoT – who will be speaking on ‘green energy’ and ‘investing in the future workforce’ at Thursday’s national IoTs’ Conference – added:

“We’ve made great strides this year; welcoming our first students last September, partnering with East Midlands Freeport to invest in sustainable energy training and completing our excellent new facilities for students at our partner colleges’ sites.

“The East Midlands will have a lot to talk about at the Conference.”
