Nottingham College partners with Balfour Beatty to enhance student employability

Nottingham College has joined forces with Balfour Beatty, a global leader in infrastructure development, in a dynamic new partnership designed to equip students with the skills, experience, and confidence needed to excel in the industry.

The collaboration is set to create real-world benefits through hands-on learning opportunities, including student involvement in the landmark Waterside Footbridge Project - This 87-metre pedestrian and cycle bridge will connect Trent Basin to Lady Bay, enhancing connectivity and supporting local infrastructure.

The partnership kickstarted on 4th June when Balfour Beatty hosted a Careers Mentoring Day at the college, supporting King’s Trust Foundation Learning students with career planning, CV development, and mock interviews. The event culminated in students submitting their CVs directly to Balfour Beatty’s hiring team - offering students work experience opportunities as part of the Waterside Footbridge Project.

With 27,000 employees across the UK, US and Hong Kong, Balfour Beatty designs, builds, and maintains critical infrastructure projects that support communities and economies, with a focus on sustainability and innovation.

Michelle Mann, Social Impact Advisor for Balfour Beatty, said:

"We are proud to collaborate with Nottingham College to support young people. The Careers Mentoring Day was designed to give students a deeper understanding of Balfour Beatty and the wider construction industry, and through insightful sessions about careers in construction, CV writing workshops and mock interviews, our aim is to help students to build confidence and readiness. Successful participants will be offered work experience opportunities on our Nottingham Footbridge Project.

“This initiative not only supports young people in their career journeys but also strengthens our commitment to social value in the communities where we work."

Maxine Blake, Head of Employer Engagement at Nottingham College, said:

"We’re proud to collaborate with partners who share our values – giving back to the local community and our firm focus on sustainability, aligns very well with the ethos at Balfour Beatty.

“Opportunities like these provide our students with invaluable insights into the world of work and help bridge the gap between education and industry. We’re excited to continue building this partnership and look forward to welcoming the team back in September for another inspiring mentoring session as the new academic year begins."
