Housing association’s wildflower giveaway in full bloom as communities and colleagues plant for biodiversity

A Nottinghamshire housing association’s wildflower seed giveaway has taken root, with 500 free seed packets distributed to customers and communities to support biodiversity and bring nature back to local spaces.

The ‘Create a Buzz – Planting with Platform’ campaign was launched ahead of the International Day for Biological Diversity, inspiring individuals and neighbourhoods to help pollinators thrive by planting wildflower seeds.  Sponsored by sustainability partner JLL – a real estate organisation, offering investment and leasing to facilities and construction solutions – the initiative offers a vibrant opportunity for Platform customers to reconnect with nature, one seed packet at a time.

Lianne Taylor, Sustainability Director at Platform Housing Group said:

“Wildflowers aren’t just beautiful to look at, they play a vital role in supporting our bees, butterflies and other pollinators, which are in decline.  It’s fantastic to see so many people get involved.  Even a small patch of wildflowers can make a big difference to our local ecosystems.”

Wildflowers are crucial for biodiversity.  Pollinators such as bees and butterflies depend on them for nectar and pollen, particularly in spring and summer when they are most active.  However, with 97 per cent of the UK’s wildflower meadows lost since the 1930s*, efforts like this are urgently needed to reverse the decline.

Colleagues from across Platform rolled up their sleeves to take part, planting wildflower patches at office locations and community spaces.  Photographs have captured staff in action, sowing seeds and creating vibrant corners of nature where wildlife can thrive.

“This is a brilliant way to connect with nature during the working day,” said Saul Taylor-Patrick, a Platform colleague who joined the planting activity.

“There’s something really uplifting about doing something hands on for the environment.  I’m excited to watch our patch grow and bloom!”

Fiona Hollingworth, Director of Affordable Housing at JLL said:

“JLL is delighted to be sponsoring such an important campaign, which exemplifies the commitment that Platform and JLL share in improving the environments in which we live and provides a wonderful opportunity for Platform’s customers and staff to work together in a positive way to increase biodiversity and pollination in their neighbourhoods.”

Lianne concluded:

“It’s all about small actions that add up to big change.  Seeing our colleagues and communities coming together to help nature bounce back is truly inspiring.”

Participants are being encouraged to share photos of their blooming results by tagging @PlatformHousing and using the hashtag #CreateABuzz on social media, helping the campaign flourish far and wide.
