Former Engineer Brings Expertise to East Midlands Funeral Directors in Unique Career Move

A former technical engineer has joined a local funeral directors to take on a more ‘fulfilling’ vocation. Ryan Marsh, who has more than a decade of experience in engineering and quality assurance, will take on a new role as General Manager at of A.W. Lymn The Craftsmen in Stone part of A.W. Lymn The Family Funeral Service.

The unlikely switch came after Ryan sought a new career in a futureproof industry, which he would find equally as rewarding. He contacted A.W. Lymn directly, outlining how his skills could contribute to the company’s heritage and growth.

His is initiative caught the attention of Fifth Generation Lymn and Managing Director Matthew Lymn Rose, who recognised a strong alignment in their values and standards.

Ryan said:

“Helping to install my first memorial was both humbling and fulfilling. It reinforced the emotional impact of what we do at A.W. Lymn. My goal is to maintain the best practices that have been here for many years and introduce some new processes that elevate our service and give our team the tools and confidence to continue to deliver excellence every time.”

This appointment reflects A.W. Lymn’s commitment to maintaining excellence in memorial craftsmanship and enhancing operational quality across its funeral masonry division.

“Ryan’s initiative and experience made an immediate impression,” said Matthew. “He recognised how his skills could support the growth of our business, and we felt he’d be a perfect fit for our stonemasonry operations. Ryan is aware of the high standards our families expect and is keen to maintain those.”

With over a decade of experience in engineering and quality assurance, Ryan brings a strong foundation in compliance, international standards, and team leadership. He started his career in mechanical and electrical engineering before joining a global marine engineering firm.

There, he climbed the ranks from Technical Assistant to Group Warranty Manager, overseeing operations across six international offices and managing 29 global agents. His experience positions him well to lead improvements within A.W. Lymn’s memorial services.

With a focus on streamlining workflows, optimising the company’s software, and supporting professional growth among the team, Ryan is blending his background in compliance with a hands-on, people-first approach.

Ryan’s leadership will support a culture of continuous improvement, cross-training, and professional development, helping A.W. Lymn’s stonemasonry team to adapt and thrive in an evolving industry.
