Over the last decade, the very nature of recycling has been changed. It’s shifted from a simple household chore that was often considered a tick-box activity, to a critical component of a circular economy, and a process that directly impacts resource preservation and climate resilience.
However, despite significant progress since the early 2000s, UK recycling rates have unfortunately stagnated in recent years. According to Statistica, the recycling rate of waste from households across the UK hit an average of 44% in 2022 – the lowest figure recorded in a decade. This stagnation underscores the urgent need for renewed action and a shift from passive participation to active, impactful change.
Global Recycling Day is an important initiative which brings together different stakeholders from the waste management industry to reinforce our collective commitment to sustainable practices and drive innovation. It's a day to celebrate the progress we've made, but also to acknowledge the challenges that remain and the further action that must be taken.
