Footballers Ella Hilliard and Camille Jenkins joined staff and students from the University of Derby in celebrating Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day (March 8).

The pair, who both play for Derby County Women’s first team, took part in a ‘Hands of Change’ event, which was organised by the Union of Students.

Participants painted their hands with brightly-coloured paint and left their mark on a canvas board, creating a six-foot high mural which will be on display at the University’s Kedleston Road site.

The aim was to bring together  staff and students  at the University, and its wider community, and provide an opportunity to find out how to get involved in upcoming initiatives.

Holly Lloyd, President of the Union of Students at the University of Derby, said:

“The event was an opportunity to come together to celebrate the strength and impact of women in our community, and to mark International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month.

“The Union of Students has a variety of initiatives throughout the year which offer a great chance to connect with others, spark conversations and build new friendships.”

Ella Hilliard plays for Derby County Women’s first team. The University of Derby showed its support for the club by signing an agreement to become the Ewes’ front of shirt sponsor for the 2024/25 season.

Ella, who is also a Sports Journalism student at the University, said:

“Derby County and the University of Derby have enjoyed a strong and positive relationship over the last 10 years, and it was great to be asked to take part in this event.”

Camille, who is studying on the University’s FDA Athlete Development programme, added:

“Women’s football has grown so much in recent years, and it is thanks to support from partners such as the University of Derby that it is able to thrive.”

The University of Derby, as well as the Union of Students, has further activities planned for the month of March including a Women and Allies Network event on March 6 and 7 and, on Tuesday, March 18, it will host the Aurora Programme event; an Advance Higher Education leadership development initiative for women.
