Update: The Big Track for Base 51

Local Charity invites businesses and people to join them on a mental health walk for International Day of Charity – with over 80 people signed up to take part.

Base 51, a charity that has been supporting young people in Nottingham for over 30 years, is leading a mental health walk at 10am on the 5th September to raise awareness for their work.

Local people and businesses are invited to join the charity in walking The Big Track, a 10 mile circular walk from the City Centre to Beeston and back. The walk follows the river Trent and the canals and is popular with cyclists and walkers alike.

Young people in the UK have higher mental health needs than ever before, with 1 in 6 young people in England (aged 5 to 16) experienced a mental health problem in 2020, up from 1 in 9 in 2017. Studies have shown that not supporting young people who are struggling has huge detrimental effects throughout their lives.

Base 51 offers a range of counselling for young people aged 11-25 in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. They have been operational for over 30 years and provide services including: counselling and specialist counselling for those who have been through violent crime or have been, or are at risk of being, criminal or sexually exploited. They also run OutBurst, an LGBTQIA+ group for 11-15 and 16-21 year olds.

Base 51’s Head of Fundraising and Events, Verity Woods, said

“We all know the power of being in nature on your mental health, so we wanted to get everyone together to boost their own mental wellbeing whilst also raising awareness for the struggles that young people in the local area are going through. It’s a great event for individuals, or for businesses who want to do some Social Value work and support their staff’s wellbeing!”

The International Day of Charity was established with the objective of sensitising and mobilising people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities.

The charity are asking people to register on their website www.base51.org/events and, if they can, make a donation to their Crowdfunder to support their mental health services: https://gofund.me/bf3aebf7
