Derby flies its Purple Flag Award for tenth consecutive year!

Derby is celebrating the news that it has been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for its evening and night-time economy (ENTE) for the tenth year in a row.

The Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) have confirmed that Derby has retained its Purple Flag status for a further year. An international accreditation scheme, it recognises excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy.

The award acknowledges the work of Derby City Council, Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), and the businesses in the area, all of whom have played a key role in providing a safe and enjoyable night out in the city.

Areas with Purple Flag accreditation are recognised as providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture, whilst promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents. As a result, they often benefit from more visitors, lower crime and anti-social behaviour and improved perceptions.

Brad Worley, BID Manager for both the Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter BIDS, is gratified that the city has once again been recognised for its efforts in keeping visitors safe and entertained.

He said:

“The evening economy in Derby is particularly strong within the Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter, which is the leisure and cultural heart of the city centre. The retention of Purple Flag status is a hugely positive reflection of the work that so many local agencies undertake, including our BIDs, and we are proud to have helped in providing a decade of safety for our night-time visitors.”

The BIDs work closely with the Police, the City Council and local Safer Neighbourhood teams to ensure that evening guests can safely enjoy the extensive array of bars, venues, clubs and restaurants that Derby has to offer.

Martin Langsdale, Chair of the Cathedral Quarter BID said: “The award of Derby’s tenth straight Purple Flag accreditation is testament to the effective collaboration that so many agencies engage in to provide a night-time economy that adds so much to our city centre, and as a key contributor to Derby’s night-time economy, the Cathedral Quarter BID is delighted at this continued recognition of our success.”
